Green Power Rate Reduction (April 1, 2005)

Afton, WYOMING – Lower Valley Energy is excited to announce that due to the success of Lower Valley Energy’s Green Power program, rates for the wind-powered electricity will be lowered by 30%, effective April 1st, 2005. The support for our Green Power initiative has exceeded all of our expectations reports, Brian Tanabe, who handles Marketing and Communications at LVE. In addition, Tanabe reports that “although we received a tremendous initial response from our membership, we continue to hear that for some members $5 a month was still an obstacle to participation.”

In response, LVE is eliminating the administrative margin between what it pays for wind power and what it charges its members. The technology is still costlier than conventional forms of energy, but it’s environmentally friendly and something LVE members obviously value. Residential members rate will decrease from $5.00 to $3.50 for one block of Green Power (300kWh) and commercial members will now pay $17.50 instead of $25 for one Partner Level block of Green Power (1,500kWh) or $35.00 instead of $50 for one Champion Level block of GreenPower (3,000kWh). Even with the Green Power premium, Lower Valley Energy’s rates are still well below the 2004 national average for regular electricity of 9 cents.

Green Power is energy produced by renewable resources, such as the wind and sun, which are replenished naturally. Renewable energy is a clean source of energy that has a much lower environmental impact than conventional energy technologies. Members choosing to participate in LVE’s Green Power program are making a commitment to reduce the burning of fossil fuels (such as coal, oil, and natural gas) and bring a clean energy source into the region. A greater reliance on renewable resources also provides economic benefits and can improve our national energy security. What makes LVE’s Green Power program even more attractive is that the energy is harnessed directly from good old Wyoming wind. The Foote Creek Wind Project near Laramie is home to some of the nation’s strongest and most reliable wind. LVE feeds its energy pool from a variety of sources, such as hydropower and coal, with a very small fraction consisting of wind power. Power generators put power into the energy pool just as our members take energy out. By supporting Green Power you are helping to reduce the burning of fossil fuels and helping to replace conventional energy sources in our energy pool with renewable resources.
