ACE Lineman School Update (July 27, 2006)

The ACE Lineman Training School currently has six students, comprised of four apprentices, one student groundman and one summer intern. The apprentices will travel to Orem this September to attend hotline school where they will perform an array of overhead line tasks. Nearly 100 other apprentices from the surrounding area will join them for training. September also marks the beginning of the fall semester for the ACE Lineman Training School. As the school continues to develop and gain momentum it has received more and more interest from surrounding cooperative managers looking to initiate apprenticeship programs of their own.

The four apprentices are Jake Stewart and Dusty Stump both in their 4th step (18 months+), and Clay Skinner and Toby Merritt both in their 1st step (1st month). JD DeVeny, the student groundman, was involved with the program last summer as an intern and is now back as a full time student groundman. Ryan Blair is a student intern and will go back to Summit High School in September.

ACE, A Career in Energy, is the area training school for the energy industry focused on exceptional educational opportunities, career development, safety, and commitment to excellence. The vision of the program is to continually seek the opportunity to teach, train, develop, and expand the educational opportunities of those seeking a rewarding career in the energy industry. ACE Board of Director Bill Spaulding hopes to see the school become a regional entity and wishes to see participation from surrounding organizations such as the Wyoming Rural Electric Association and the Southeast Idaho Utilities.

Although ACE is a new non-profit business, the program is affiliated with 47 utilities, mainly in Utah, but covering 4 states in the area. The on-campus and home study correspondence course for the Linemen Training Course will be provided by Utah Valley State College.
